PHILO
DJ and producer Philo is always on the move. Originally from Cologne with French family roots, Philomène Robinne, now based in Vienna, has long maintained strong ties to many of the UK’s music scenes. Nowadays Philo serves dancefloors in Europe and beyond with campy house, raw breaks and groovy oldschool techno, but initially she made her name as a vinyl-only jungle DJ. Wherever her sets take her, it’s audible that she has seen and heard some things.
Her 4/4 explorations are often carried by ravey stabs. In her uplifting house sets, diva vocal chops are subverted by breakbeats and richly layered percussion. And if she plays techno, you know it’s going to bring that 90s warehouse nostalgia. Like any good traveller, Philo explores a lot of territory, and her sets tie together souvenirs from places into a coherent whole.
Philo’s unique talents are not a secret to bookers all over Europe: She has made people dance at London’s legendary Rupture, at Fusion festival and at Open Ground -- where she didn’t only play but also gave an Ableton production workshop -- as well as clubs like Prstr., Pratersauna and Grelle Forelle in her home town Vienna. Add Hamburg’s legendary Golden Pudel to the list, where she recently launched her own UK music oriented party series Chop Shop with her bestie and DJ KLARYOKO. And as if she isn’t busy enough, she also hosts the ‘Take a Break’ radio show on Callshop Radio.
Finally, much like her DJ sets, Philo’s productions bring together many worlds: While her releases on labels like Defrostatica, Hardcore Energy, Stereo45 and Nice & Deadly lean more into Philo’s breaks-heavy roots, often combining elements of jungle, footwork or UK hardcore, her current productions often bring an element of uplifting house into the mix -- see for example her solo EP on Spanish Miura records.
